On the basis of the interpretation of the poem Sir Thaddeus, the national way of thinking represented by the nobility of the northeastern lands of the former Republic of Poland has been delineated in the paper. The author makes an attempt to depict the notion of „homeland” as multidimensional as it functioned in the nobility’s awareness (gente Lithuani nationale Poloni). By means of interpreting the following words used by Mickiewicz in his poem (e.g. Lithuania, Poland/Polszcza, the Republic of Poland, the Crown, the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, etc., as well as adjectives, such as Lithuanian/ Polish), the author proves that the multidimensional nature of awareness was common among the noble class on the historic lands of Lithuania
